Payment processing is a competitive business. There are plenty of people who get into the industry without really understanding what is involved and how to best service clients’ needs but they certainly do want to get out there and sell! There are many facets to running a payment processing business and those who wish to be a part of the industry should be required to obtain the requisite education in order to provide the best service possible.
How does a business differentiate between processors who have the required knowledge and those who may just have jumped in a bit blindly? One way to do this is to look for agents who have obtained a certification called ETA – CPP.
The ETA stands for Electronic Transactions Association, which is the premier organization for payment processing professionals. CPP stands for Certified Payment Professional. When an agent holds this certification, it tells businesses that this person is knowledgeable on payment processing services and rules, and can provide strong expertise in recommending the best processing solution for a business.
Like most certifications, there are rigorous requirements that must be met. To obtain certification an agent must have:
- A minimum of one to three years experience in the payments industry;
- Been recommended by a supervisor or manager from a company in the payments industry;
- Completed and passed a rigorous examination developed by industry experts and conducted by an independent testing firm that is not affiliated with any entity in the payments industry;
- Agreed to abide by the Electronic Transactions Association’s Code of Conduct
- Agreed to pursue continuing education credits as a requirement of re-certification every three years.
Not all agents pursue the certification – in fact, it seems that few do. As a matter of fact there are only 1092 ETA CPP agents in the country! Now consider that a approximately 250 of those are customer service representatives and NOT sales agents and, well, you get the idea. Out of the thousands of merchant account sales people there are in your state and knocking on your door every day – how many are actually qualified?
Of course, those that do hold it are usually agents who take their roles in the industry seriously and want to insure that they are conducting business in compliance with standards as well as understanding how to best serve the needs of your business.
Here at Bankcard Brokers, we know that servicing our clients’ needs is the top priority, and we require our agents to hold the ETA-CPP certification. We do this because we want our agents to be educated and up to date on rules, technology and any topic in the payments processing industry. Having agents that are fully educated translates into better customer service for our clients and empowers us to create life long relationships with our clients. We believe that when our agents are able to understand the intricacies of payment processing, technology, and high level ethical standards that they are then prepared to conduct themselves in professional manner that our mission statement demands. Credibility, Legitimacy, Transparency and World Class Support – No Exceptions, No Excuses
We also believe that understanding payment data and processing thoroughly shouldn’t be an option – it should be a requirement for anyone who operates in the industry. Payment processing is highly regulated, incredibly complex, and requires handling of sensitive information. In today’s digital world, this information is highly susceptible to theft, and individuals who work with this kind of data should be held to a high standard such as that imposed by the ETA-CPP.
